2024-25 Men's Wrestling All-Conference Honors Released

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  - (Photos) The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) released its conference honors for men's wrestling in conjunction with the conference tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15. All 'of the year' honors are selected via a vote by head coaches. 

Wrestler of the Year – Will Speight, Lourdes

 

A graduate student at Lourdes, Speight has put together another tremendous year on the mats for the Gray Wolves. The Bedford, Ohio native is 30-3 on the season, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA at 184 lbs, and has a host of bonus point wins to his name including: five pins, five major decisions and 17 tech falls. Speight won the 184 pound weight class at the WHAC tournament for the second-consecutive season. 

 Newcomer of the Year – Luke Rioux, Indiana Tech

Luke Rioux a freshman from Avon, Ind. made his presence felt in his first season for Indiana Tech. The 133-pounder picked up a conference championship to cap off a 30+ win season thus far. Rioux is currently ranked No. 8 in the NAIA in his weight class. 

Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament – Trevor Marsman, Cornerstone

 

Marsman capped off a storied WHAC career by winning his third-consecutive conference title at 125 pounds. The senior earned tech fall and major decision wins to advance to the finals where he secured the title with a 4-0 decision victory. He did not lose a WHAC dual match all season. 

 

Co-Coach of the Year - Chris Williamson, Cornerstone & Thomas Pompei Indiana Tech

The Coach of the Year honor, voted on by head coaches in the conference, resulted in a co-award this season. Thomas Pompei of Indiana Tech earns a share of the honor for leading the Warriors to a third consecutive unbeaten WHAC regular season record and fifth-straight conference tournament victory. Williamson led the Golden Eagles to a 4-2 WHAC regular season record, their best mark in program history. 

 

Champion of Character Coach - Matt Santos, Cleary

Cleary head coach Matt Santos was voted by his peers as the Champions of Character Coach.

In addition to the individual honors above, winners of each weight class at the conference tournament were named First-Team All-Conference and runner-ups were awarded Second-Team All-Conference. The WHAC also released its All-Academic Team (sophomores or above in academic standing, in attendance one full year, minimum 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and Champions of Character Team (best exemplifies the five core character values of integrity, respect, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship).
