Larry Bos Honored as WHAC Impact Award Winner
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Assistant Commissioner Larry Bos was honored with the league's Impact Award at the spring meetings hosted by Cornerstone. The award, established in 2022, honors a coach, administrator, or staff member with a minimum of 10 years in the WHAC who has impacted the WHAC through positive engagement.
Bos was named assistant commissioner in 2014, but his relationship with the WHAC dates back much further. He served as the faculty athletics representive at WHAC member Cornerstone in 1990 and held that position until he retired in 2016. During that time, he was the Chair of the NAIA's Faculty Athletics Representative Association, served on the NAIA Hall of Fame selection committee, and was honored with the Wally Schwarts FAR of the Year award in 2015. He also was the WHAC's eligibilty chair while serving at Cornerstone.
“This award is about the difference you make for others in the WHAC and Larry has done exactly that for hundreds," reflected former WHAC commissioner Rob Miller, who hired Bos as the assitant commissioner. "Larry has helped so many coaches and athletes through the eligibility process and he is a source of wisdom for many."
If you ask what Bos' exact role is with the conference, one might be hard pressed to answer with specifics. Yes, he handles all the eligibility certificates for student-athletes in the WHAC and yes he serves as the WHAC liaison on the NAIA's Conduct and Ethics committee. But, since he does so much more, a better answer might be that he does whatever is needed.
Bos handles the awards for the conference including the design, ordering, and distribution of hundreds of All-Conference plaques and special recognition awards. He also manages each sport's handbook so coaches have the most up-to-date policies for their sports. He often can be seen at various conference tournaments doing whatever is needed at the time - handing out awards, crowd control, and public relations.
Perhaps the best answer as to what Bos' role is with the league is that he is an invaluable asset to the league who has made a huge difference.
