ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Matthew Distelrath, a former Concordia basketball and baseball player, has returned to his alma mater after agreeing to serve as the Cardinal men's and women's head golf coach, as well as returning to a role he once had prior: assistant men's basketball coach. In addition to his coaching duties, Distelrath will also oversee the university's intramural program.

"We're excited to have Matt back at Concordia," said Ben Limback, Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball coach. "He is an excellent recruitier and will do a great job bringing in quality student-athletes for both the golf program and the basketball program here at Concordia."

Distelrath began his collegiate career on the hardwood at St. Mary's College in Orchard Lake after a standout three-sport prep career at St. Clair High School. Upon the cancellation of the St. Mary program, Distelrath (who had two years of eligiblity remaining) found himself in Ann Arbor to play for the Cardinal program. His junior year he played for former coach Chip Wilde with his career finishing under the tutalege of Limback.

Also in his final year of collegiate eligibility in the spring of 2004, Distelrath returned to the diamond as a pitcher and played for current baseball coach and Sports Information Director Karl Kling.

Limback quickly named Distelrath to his coaching staff the following year before he was hired by Marygrove College to be the school's Sports Information Director, Assistant Basketball Coach (overseeing recruiting) and Recreation Coordinator. Distelrath held those positions for two seasons and in each year he helped the Mustang programs win more games than the year prior.

Distelrath left Marygrove after the 2007 season as he accepted a job as a sales respresentative for Signature Sports. But he didn't leave coaching as he returned to his high school stomping grounds to become the assistant football coach (receivers), the freshman boy's basketball coach and the junior varsity baseball coach.

But when Limback determined that a bona fide recruiter was needed to quickly build the fledgling golf program at Concordia, he knew just who to call. Limback combined the golf position with an assistant basketball job, knowing that Distelrath will excel in both and be a real benefit to the overall athletic department.

"I'm excited to return to Concordia and again work with the fine coaching staff we have here," Distelrath said. "Working under Coach Limback was one of the draws, as I am very confident in the direction of the department with him as the Athletic Director."

With Distelrath's tremendous experience in a wide array of sports, Limback feels that his newest coach will be more than capable of building a quality golf program.

"(Matt) has a tremendous amount of passion for coaching and is a great addition to our Athletic Department," Limback said.

Distelrath believes his experience as a coach thus far, plus his ability to work with and relate to players will allow him to be successful. But he also realizes that his bread and butter is his acumen on the recruiting trail.

"I will be doing a lot of recruiting for both golf and basketball," Distelrath said. "I'm excited to get working on building a strong golf program and helping Coach Limback in continuing to build an even stronger basketball team."
