Klagenfurt, Austria - With a 6-0 record, capped off with a 92-59 victory over the Czech Republic in the gold medal game, Team USA won the 2008 World Games in Klagenfurt, Austria and was headlined by Coach Youngs as well as five future Panthers. Led by five future Davenport Panthers, Team USA went 4-0 in pool play to garner the #1 seed in bracket play. The team then proceeded to defeat Germany 63-32 in the semi-finals before playing the Czech Republic, a team that hadn't lost in International play in 3 years. The Czech Republic, led by 6'5" Tereza Cernikova, led 22-13 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. A Karlee Despres (Comstock Park, MI/Davenport Univ.) three pointer, followed by eight straight points from Abby Neff (Lakeland, IN/Davenport Univ.) gave the USA its first lead at 26-24. USA led 40-39 with a minute to play in the half when Kortni Elsworth (Goodrich, MI/Michigan State) scored five straight points to take a 45-39 halftime lead. The lead remained at six points with twelve minutes to go until the USA exploded on a 26-2 run over the next six minutes to blow the game open. The USA team included the following players: Paige Sparks (Hamden, CT), Kristina and Katelyn Cousins (Grand Rapids, MI), Brianna Swartz and Madelyn Sandtveit (Caledonia, MI), Alexis Brodbeck (Lake Odessa, MI), Dani Hunt (Lake City, MI), Kayla Gross (New Lothrop, MI), along with Neff, Elsworth and Despres. |
