Grand Rapids, Mich. - Davenport University has announced the hiring of former Grand Valley State assistant Burt Paddock as the Panthers head men's basketball coach. Paddock brings six years of college coaching experience, including the last four as the Head Assistant Coach with the Lakers.

"We are thrilled to welcome Burt Paddock and his family to Davenport University, stated Director of Athletics Paul Lowden. His credentials as a player along with his coaching experience at GVSU and knowledge of the game make him a perfect fit for Davenport University. Burt is a relentless recruiter who has as strong set of recruiting contacts in the State of Michigan and throughout the Midwest. He is a genuine and engaging person who will generate enthusiasm and excitement to our Men's Basketball Program."

"Davenport University has given me state of the art facilities, a great location and wonderful people to work with that are set on winning, said Paddock. I think the attitudes and vision of the people I am now surrounded by are in line with me and what my team is going to strive for. All three of my coaching opportunities have been similar in terms of where they were when I arrived."

Paddock comes to Davenport from Grand Valley State, where he had served as an assistant for the past four years under head coach Ric Wesley. At GVSU, Paddock was responsible for various day-to-day duties within the Laker basketball program, in addition to being the lead recruiter.

During the 2006-07 and 2007-2008 seasons, Paddock helped the Lakers to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA DII Elite 8. The 2007-2008 Lakers posted an NCAA school record 36 wins all coming in a row to open the season before finally falling in the Elite 8.

"Over the next two years, it is monumental to establish an attitude that goes along with DU basketball, added Paddock. If we are able to come to work every day and give our best effort then the wins and losses will take care of themselves. I am a true believer that we are in a unique sport that has a playing season that is longer than any other sport. Therefore, it is pivotal to establish a mind-set of what we are about and to develop a consistent work ethic that will last the whole season."

Prior to his appointment at Grand Valley State, Paddock was an assistant coach at Saint Joseph's College from 2002-2004. Paddock served as the Pumas' recruiting coordinator and was also responsible for pre-season/post-season workout programs, overseeing travel plans and budgetary issues and implementing innovative practice plans.

"I look forward to meeting and learning about each one of the players and their families, stated Paddock. I must have a great relationship with the players in order for me to understand what makes them work and what will allow them to become better people as well as players. I want to build relationships within our entire team that will allow us to play hard together and for one another."

Lakers Head Coach Ric Wesley spoke very highly of Burt and added "Coach Paddock has played a huge role in the success of our program. His energy and enthusiasm for his job really helped set the tone for our team from the first day he joined us. He has been involved in every aspect of our program. He is an outstanding recruiting as well as tremendous teacher of the game."

A native of Indiana, Paddock has strong Great Lakes roots and is a 1997 graduate of Manchester College in North Manchester, IN with a degree in Business Administration. Paddock played four years of collegiate basketball and in his four seasons at Manchester, the team posted a 91-24 record and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championship game during his sophomore season. Paddock left the school as its 2nd All-Time Leading Scorer and was named to the All-Conference 1st team three times as well as being named the Freshman of the Year in 1993-1994.

Burt and his wife, Carrie reside in Jenison, MI and are the proud parents of their daughter Hannah Leigh (4).
