LIVONIA, Mich. -- The top-seeded Madonna Crusaders are one win away from the WHAC tournament championship after defeating Concordia and Indiana Tech in day one action at Ilitch Ballpark.
Game One - #2 Indiana Tech def. #3 Concordia, 12-3
Indiana Tech got off to a quick start, scoring three times in the opening frame on its way to a 12-3 win over Concordia to kick-off the 2008 WHAC Championship Tournament. The Warriors pounded out 16 hits with Steve Weigle leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance. Shane Tirey, Johnny Crane and Will Richards each drove in a pair of runs for the Warriors who send Concordia to the losers bracket with the win. Kris Begley picked up the victory with four strike outs in eight innings of work.
Aaron Hacias went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in a losing effort for the Cardinals.
Game Two - #1 Madonna def. #3 Concordia, 6-2
The top-seeded and 24th ranked Crusaders scored three times in the first innings and let starting pitcher Will Kennedy do the rest on their way to a 6-2 win over Concordia in the second game of the day.
Ryan Morrow and Dave Herrick each posted two hits for the Crusaders, with Herrick adding a pair of RBIs.
Aaron Hacias and Tim McEvoy each posted a pair of hits for Concordia who was eliminated with the loss.
Kennedy went 7 and two thirds innings with five strikeouts to get the victory. Sean Maher earned the save.
Game Three - #1 Madonna def. #2 Indiana Tech, 17-1
In the first game of a best of three championship series between the Crusaders and Warriors, Madonna's offense exploded for 17 runs and 17 hits and benefitted from nine Tech errors to cruise to the 17-1 victory.
Six Crusaders posted multi-hit games, including three apiece from Zack McMillin, Drew Adamiec and Kevin Zerbo. Zerbo, the WHAC Co-Player of the Year also launched a pair of home runs and finished with a game high five RBIs. Starting pitcher Eric Wendling benefitted from the hot MU bats, going the distance while scattering six hits and striking out two for his fifth win of the year. The Crusaders and Warriors will continue the tournament tomorrow at 12:00 pm with game two in the best of three.
