GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Aquinas College outfielder Ashley Aspinall and Madonna University hurler Jess Irwin have been named the WHAC Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for April 21-27, 2008, the final week of league honors.

 

Aspinall put together an impressive hitting display in four conference games, hitting .786 (11-for-14) with three doubles, four RBIs and seven runs scored as the Saints put together a 4-0 mark. The junior from Middleville, Michigan, helped Aquinas to a second place regular season finish and slugged 1.000 on the week.

Irwin, a freshman from Monroe, Michigan, is the Pitcher of the Week for the third straight week after posting a 3-0 record, including a save. Irwin helped Madonna clinch the WHAC regular season championship and set three records in the process, including the school's single-season strikeout mark with her five K performance versus Cornerstone. Irwin also became MU's single-season and career saves leader. In 19-and-one-third innings of work, Irwin allowed just nine hits, two earned runs and struck out 26 while posting a 0.72 ERA.

NOTABLE SOFTBALL PLAYER PERFORMANCES
MARIAH WELKE (SIENA HEIGHTS): Hit .407 (11-for-27) with two doubles, two homers and 9 RBIs in 10 games.
CAT SIDOR (MADONNA): Hit .467 (7-for-15) with a double, triple and three RBI's while extending her hit streak to 27 games.


NOTABLE SOFTBALL PITCHING PERFORMANCES
TAWNY McSWEENY (SIENA HEIGHTS): Went 1-2 with 9 K's in 24.1 innings of work.
ALYSSA FLESER (AQUINAS): Went 1-0 with eight K's in a win over Concordia.
