GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Siena Heights University catcher Jess Singletary and Madonna University hurler Jess Irwin, who hurled her second no-hitter of the season, have been named the WHAC Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for April 21, 2008.
Singletary, a sophomore from Warren, Michigan, put together an impressive week at the plate hitting .381 and slugging .952 over a eight game stretch that saw the Saints go 5-3. The Fraser high school product went eight-for-21 with four home runs and 10 RBIs on the week, tying the SHU single season record for homers in the process. More impressively, each of her four home runs either broke ties or put the Saints up for good in WHAC games. Singletary also scored seven runs on the week. Irwin, a freshman from Monroe, Michigan, is the Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week after posting a 5-1 record, including her second no-hitter of the season. Irwin was stellar in 31-and-one-third innings of work this week, posting a 0.89 ERA and striking out 42 batters while allowing just four earned runs in seven appearances. Irwin also mixed in her second save of the season in a 4-2 win over Indiana Tech. NOTABLE SOFTBALL PLAYER PERFORMANCES ALYSSA FLESER (AQUINAS): Went 4-1 with 8 K's in 20 innings and a 1.75 ERA.
