GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With weather forcing all but one team off the fields this week, Concordia University teammates Justin Gauthier and Alex Hoover have been named WHAC baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively in the third week of honors for the 2008 season.
Gauthier, a senior, picked up the mound win in a 9-2 victory over Cedarville University. The Muskegon, Michigan, native struck out four Yellow Jackets through seven innings while scattering seven hits and allow just two runs. The win helped Concordia to its best start in school history over the first 10 games of the year at 9-1. Teammate Alex Hoover, a senior right fielder, is the WHAC Player of the Week after hitting .500 (3-for-6) in a double-header sweep of Cedarville. The Shelbyville, Michigan, native also scored a run and drove in five including a home run while collecting his 100th career hit as a Cardinal. Hoover moved into the Concordia top-10 career standings in singles (72), at-bats (333), hits (102) and runs scored (57) during the two-game stretch.
