SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Cornerstone University women's basketball team was placed under the spotlight during the 2008 women's basketeball banquet of champions in Sioux City, Iowa last week being named as the Team of Character.
In 2000, the NAIA launched the program that focuses on the following five core character values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
At each of the NAIA's 23 national championships, student-athletes and teams are recognized for not only their accomplishments in sport, but also the character traits they display towards their teammates, coaches, teachers and fans.
On Tuesday, March 11th the Cornerstone women's basketball team was recognized and was presented with the award.
"As the presenter was talking about the award I was sitting at the banquet wondering if the team was at the national tournament and who it was going to be," said head coach Carla Fles.  "When they said Cornerstone University is this year's receipient I was ecstatic.  We try to model the core values of champions of character and it is an honor to receive this award."
