Fort Wayne, Ind. -- The Indiana Tech Warriors Track and Field team claimed it’s first ever National Champion when Junior runner Alissa McKaig outpaced her competition by 35 seconds in the women’s 5000 meter contest.  She completed the event with a time of 16:45.0 which ousted last year’s champion’s time by a full minute.  McKaig also earned All-American honors with her championship victory.

The men’s team also landed a couple of All-Americans with two top six finishes.  Kesonn Lee, Junior from Fort Wayne, placed 6th in the 60m dash with a time of 6.93 seconds.  Washington D.C. native and Junior Derrick Brinkley ran the 600m race in a time of 1:20.97 to finish 5th.

Indiana Tech started their Track and Field teams a year earlier than expected and in lieu of having a complete roster of athletes for every event, the Warriors still finished among the top teams in the nation.  The women’s team earned enough points to finish 19th and the men’s team claimed 36th.

Other notable performances for the Warriors include Alyssa Webb who finished 7th in the women’s 800m, Brett Tipton’s 8th place finish in the men’s 800m, and an 8th place finish in the men’s 4x800m relay by runners Jonathan Jiminez, Brett Tipton, Jordan Mitchell, and Derrick Brinkley.  The Warriors look to add depth to their team next year as they fill out the remaining positions on their team rosters.
