GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --  The Aquinas College Saints are the 2008 WHAC women's basketball tournament champions after an 84-80 victory over Madonna University in the AQ Fieldhouse Tuesday night.
The Saints found themselves down early, but clawed their way back into the contest to take a 42-41 lead into the halftime break.  They then went on the offensive attack down low, as Alicia McCarthy took over in the paint, finishing with a team high 22 points as the Saints pushed the second half lead to 10-points.
But Madonna would not go down without a fight as they stormed back to tie the game mid-way through the second stanza, only to see the Aquinas post game be too much down the stretch in the NAIA National Tournament bid clinching victory.
All five Madonna starters scored in double figures, led by senior Caryn Inman who deposited 22 points to match McCarthy for game-high honors.
The Saints earn the automatic berth to the 2008 National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa next week.
