Grand Rapids, MI -- In a defensively powered women’s soccer game that paired Cornerstone and St. Francis (IN) only one could emerge as the victor. In the end, thanks to the double overtime goal by sophomore Jessica Brussee (Kalamazoo, MI), the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone (13-5-2) emerged victorious, garnering the Region VIII championship and earning the right to represent the Region VIII in the national championship November 14-20 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Fl. On a short pass from senior Sarah Owens (Greenville, MI) to just outside the left corner of the goal box , Brussee footed the ball in back left corner of the net for the Golden Eagles in the 106th minute of the game. On the game, Brussee tallied half of Cornerstone’s 10 shots on goal. In the net, goalie Julianne Bruining (Byron Center, MI) posted seven saves. On the game, St. Francis accumulated 21 shots, seven of which where on goal. St. Francis had their closet opportunity to rain victorious in overtime play in the 103 th minute when a ball misplayed by the defense of Cornerstone was reclaimed by St. Francis’ Sara Thieme (Ft. Wayne, IN) just outside the center of the goal box, Thieme miscalculated and booted the ball just high of the goal. The Cougars goalie Stacey Rider (Ft. Wayne, In) tallied nine goals on the day. |
