Grand Rapids, MI -- Cornerstone women's soccer put the pressure on early as they scored the only goal of the game in the 5th minute of play in the Region VIII semi-final match-up with #18 Indiana Wesleyan. The upset win sends the Eagles to the Region VIII Championship where they will meet the Cougars of St. Francis (IN) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 3. Fellow WHAC opponent Aquinas falls 2-0 to St. Francis in their only shutout loss of the year.

GAME 1 –Aquinas vs. St. Francis (IN) 

In their first shutout loss of the year, the Aquinas College women's soccer team ends their post season run in a 2-0 loss to St. Francis in the opening round of the Region VIII women's soccer tournament. 

The Saints put the pressure on early as the Saints attempted three shots in the first five minutes of play. The ball rallied back and forth as both teams attempted to find the back net. St. Francis was the first to find the back of the net as they chipped in the go-ahead goal of the game halfway through the first half as senior Ashely Henry (Fort Wayne, IN) scored off a cross pass from freshman Katie Frygang (Fort Wayne, IN). 

The Cougars then upped their lead as Sara Thieme (Ft. Wayne, IN) scored the cougars second goal of the game of a long pass down the center of the field from Mary Whisler (Elkhart, IN) Despite the 2-0 advantage for the Cougars, the Saints managed to out shot the cougars posting 13 shots to St. Francis 9. 

Opportunity knocked numerous times in the second half for the Saints as they attempted to shorten the two goal deficit. The Saints posted 13 shots in the second half, of which none where able to find the back of the net for the Saints. With the loss, the Saints ended their season with 16-4 overall record.
 

GAME 2 – Cornerstone vs. #18 Indiana Wesleyan  

The second game of the Region VIII women’s soccer semi-final was decided in the 5th minute of play as Cornerstone’s Liz Meyers (Kalamazoo, MI) scored from the far corner off a 15 yard shot unassisted after a break down defensively by #18 Indiana Wesleyan. 

Despite out shooting the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone (12-5-2) 19-3 in overall shots, Indiana Wesleyan couldn’t mustard enough foot to complete a transaction for a goal. IWU made a last ditch effort in the 88th minute of play as they produced three consecutive shots that were blocked by the Eagle’s defense. 

With the upset win, Cornerstone advances to the Region VIII championship Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 3 p.m.
