Grand Rapids, MI -- The season continues for the Aquinas Men's Soccer team as they managed to upset the WHAC tournament second-seed Davenport in a 3-0 tournament championship victory. The Saints, the WHAC tournament #4 seed, return to regional play for the first time since 2000, a year in which the Saints advanced to the National tournament eventually losing a 3-6 first round game. With the win, the Saints have garnered the WHAC #1 seed as well as the right to host the regional tournament game on November 3rd at noon on the campus of Aquinas. The Saints never looked back as they jumped off to quick lead thanks to the swift foot of senior Eric Smith (Middleville, MI/Thornapple Kellogg) from fellow senior Levi Swaney (Mattawan, MI/Mattawan) in the 10th minute of play. The Saints scored again after a misplayed ball by Davenport and some skilled footwork down the sideline by freshman Jeovani Pantoja (Grand Rapids, MI/Grandville) who cross passed to the Saints leading scorer Erich Jackson (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) for a goal. The Saints solidfied the win with a third goal at the start of the second period, in the 45th minute of play, from a corner pass from senior Goran Guzina (Schererville, IN/Lake Central) to Pantoja. The Saints mirrored the Panthers in shots and shots on goal respectively tallying eight shots and four shots on goal a piece. Goalkeeper Ben Richardson (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central) posted four saves for the Saints. |
