Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The WHAC weekly award winners have been announced in soccer and volleyball for on-the-field efforts October 1-7, 2007. On the strength of a pair of wins over WHAC and NAIA top-25 teams, UM-Dearborn swept the volleyball honors while a pair of Madonna men's soccer players walked away with weekly awards and Cornerstone and Siena Heights garnered women's soccer accolades.
VOLLEYBALL
A pair of upsets over top-25 teams earned a trio of UM-Dearborn student-athletes, Kristi Igo, Renee Laidler and Chelsea McCune, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) volleyball Player, Setter and Libero of the Week awards respectively for October 1-7. Igo, a senoir middle blocker, tallied 30 kills over a three match stretch, helping the Wolves to a undefeated week. The Wayne, Michigan, native also posted a solo block and eight block assists as UMD upset then No. 20 Cornerstone and then No. 17 Madonna on back-to-back nights.
Laidler was named Setter of the Week after putting up stellar numbers for UMD. The Lincoln Park, Michigan, native had 103 assists in 10 games for a 10.3 average. She also chipped in with 14 digs, 12 kills and six block assists as UMD upset then No. 20 Cornerstone and then No. 17 Madonna on back-to-back nights.
McCune posted 57 digs and made just five erros in 101 attempts. The Allen Park, Michigan, native also helped the Wolves’ cause with three aces from the service line as UMD upset then No. 20 Cornerstone and then No. 17 Madonna on back-to-back nights.

Madonna University forward Makesi Lewis and forward/goalie Mark Pikula have been named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for Oct. 1-7.
Lewis, a freshman from Diego Martin, Trinidad, scored the five goals and had one during a week that saw the Crusaders go 2-0 and assert themselves in the driver’s seat in the WHAC race. Lewis scored four goals, including the game winner in a 7-0 win at Concordia on Saturday after scoring a goal and adding an assist earlier in the week in Madonna’s 3-0 win at Cornerstone. Pikula, a sophomore from Dearborn, Michigan, was pressed into duty as the Crusaders’ keeper for Saturday’s match at Concordia after injuries had depleted the Madonna goalie ranks to nil. Pikula made eight saves in the Crusaders’ win over the Cardinals. He added an assist on the game winning goal as well. Cornerstone University sophomore Jessica Brussee and Siena Heights University freshman Haley Mancini are the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) women’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for October 1-7. Brussee, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, scored three goals and added an assist as the Golden Eagles posted two WHAC wins. Brussee netted both game winning goals for CU and posted her assist in Cornerstone’s 3-0 win over Madonna.
Mancini, from Berkley, Michigan, posted 11 saves, including stopping a penalty kick attempt with five seconds left in the first half to keep the Saints’ game with then-unbeaten Aquinas tied at 1-1. SHU won the match 2-1. This is the second week in a row that Mancini as taken home the WHAC honor.
