GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The reigning WHAC tournament champions from a year ago are the unanimous pick to take the league regular season in 2007-08 as Aquinas College earned 64 of a possible 64 total points by league coaches in the annual preseason poll released today. Madonna University senior forward D.J. Bridges is the coaches pick for preseason Player of the Year. Bridges, who was second in the league in scoring last season (19.8 ppg.), received five of eight votes in the category and was a unanimous pick to the ten-member preseason squad.
Aquinas, who finished second last season before winning the conference tournament, saw four players earn preseason honors, the most of any team. Pedja Lazik (Jr., F, Kentwood, Mich.), John Lierman (So., G, Holt, Mich.), Jordan Torres (Jr., G, Caledonia, Mich.) and Jeff Wierzbicki (Sr., F, Elk Rapids, Mich.) were all named to the preseason team. Indiana Tech was picked to finish second in the preseason poll with 47 total points. The Warriors, guided by head coach Jeff Parrish, had one preseason selection, junior Tim Browning (F, Detroit, Mich.). Madonna University, who finished fourth last year, is picked to finish third. The Crusaders notched 46 points and saw senior transfer Jon Battle (G, Cleveland, Ohio) named to the preseason team. Rounding out the coaches poll was Siena Heights, Davenport, Concordia and Michigan-Dearborn, picked fifth through eighth respectively.
