GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Defending WHAC regular season champion Davenport University is the pick among league coaches to repeat in 2007-08 with senior guard Jeanette Woodberry (Detroit, Mich.) tabbed as the preseason Player of the Year. The Panthers received 62 of a possible 64 points and six of eight first place votes by the eight conference head coaches. Woodberry was a near unanimous player of the year selection, garnering all but one of the possible eight votes.
Woodberry is one of 10 players named to the preseason All-WHAC team and one of three Panthers on the squad. Woodberry is joined by teammates Lynne Blomberg (Jr., F, Harbor Springs, Mich.) and Kristin Bergsma (Jr., F, Grand Rapids, Mich.) who hope to lead Davenport to back-to-back WHAC regular season titles after finishing the 2006-07 campaign 25-8 overall and 12-2 in WHAC play. Aquinas College, the league regular season runner-up last season is picked to finish second with 54 points and one first place vote by the coaches this year. Head Coach Linda Nash has a pair of players on the preseason team in Claire Hogan (Sr., G, Lansing, Mich.) and Joslyn Narber (So., F, Wyoming, Mich.). Cornerstone University is the coaches pick to finish third with 52 points and one first place vote. Led by backcourt duo Jenna Plewes (Jr., G, Zeeland, Mich.) and Kara Overbeek (Jr., G, Holland, Mich.). The Golden Eagles were 22-11, 10-4 in WHAC play on their way to a third place regular season finish and conference tournament championship. Madonna University, under second year head coach Carl Graves is picked fourth in the preseason. The Crusaders have one player on the preseason squad, junior Christie Carrico (Jr., F, Waterford, Mich.). The Crusaders made a run to the WHAC tournament title game last year after finishing the regular season 8-6 in league play and a fourth place finish. Rounding out the preseason team are a pair of Michigan-Dearborn Wolves, Chelsea Acho (Jr., F, Belleville, Mich.) and Kandice Perryman (So., C, Oak Park, Mich.). The Wolves are tabbed for a fifth place finish and hope Perryman can return to glory after sitting out last season. Rounding out the coaches poll are Concordia, Siena Heights and Indiana Tech, picked sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
