Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The second weekly award winners were announced for soccer and volleyball as seven student-athletes were honored for their accomplishments by the league today.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Cornerstone University junior mid-fielder Jaren Soule and Aquinas College sophomore goal keeper Kristina Gladstone are the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) women’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for September 3-9. Soule, a native of Grand Haven, Michigan, posted three goals over a three game stretch for the Golden Eagles, including a pair of scores in the squad’s 5-0 win over Northwestern College (IA). Soule started the week with a goal in CU’s 5-3 loss to NCAA opponent Calvin College and capped it with her two goal performance versus Northwestern. For the week, Soule tallied six points as her team went 2-1. Gladstone, a sophomore keeper from Holt, Michigan, notched four saves in a pair of conference victories for the Saints. In Aquinas’ first win, a 3-0 blanking of Indiana Tech, Gladstone registered a save while facing five shots on goal. She followed up with three saves in 14 shots on goal in a 1-0 win over Siena Heights. For the week, Gladstone registered four saves with 19 shots on goal while posting the two shut-out conference victories.

Siena Heights University men’s soccer players Joe Russo and Andy Klenner have been named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for Sept. 3-9.
Russo, a senior forward from Farmington Hills, Michigan, tallied six points on the pitch in two conference victories for the Saints. Russo started the week with a pair of goals in SHU’s 4-0 conference blanking of Concordia University, then added the game winning goal in a 1-0 league blanking of Aquinas. Both victories came at home.
Teammate Andy Klenner was named Defensive Player of the Week after posting a pair of shutouts in net for the Saints. In the 4-0 win over Concordia, Klenner registered two saves. The sophomore goalkeeper from Macomb, Michigan, then posted five saves in the 1-0 victory over Aquinas. For the week, Klenner made seven stops in 180 minutes of action while facing 19 total shots on goal.

Cornerstone University senior outside hitter Rebecca Baker, UM-Dearborn senior setter Renee Laidler and Madonna University senior libero Jacqui Gatt are the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) volleyball Player, Setter and Libero of the Week respectively for September 3-9. Baker, a native of Grandville, Michigan, helped the Golden Eagles to a 3-1 record while posting 62 kills and 77 digs over 15 games. The senior tallied a double-double (kills/digs) in three of the four matches and reached double figures in digs in all four. For the week, Baker averaged 4.13 kills and 5.13 digs while contributing 14 total blocks.
Laidler, a senior from Lincoln Park, Michigan, posted 142 assists, 31 kills and 77 digs in five matches for the Wolves. Laidler, the reigning WHAC Setter of the Year, did her part to lead UMD to a pair of victories, averaging nearly eight assists per game while contributing 11 block assists.
Gatt, a senior from Livonia, Michigan, led Madonna to a 3-1 record while earning All-Tournament team honors at the Julie Martin Memorial Tournament hosted by the Crusaders. Gatt posted 61 digs over 12 games, an average of just over five digs per game. Gatt reached double figures in three of the four MU victories, including a week-high 19 in MU’s win over 24th ranked Cedarville (OH).
