Dearborn, Mich. -- After struggling in their innaugural year last season, the Panthers were able to put win #1 on the board with a 5-game victory over University of Rio Grande at the U-M Dearborn Early Bird Tournament.
The Panthers, led by head coach Rick Rykse, were unable to post a victory in their first season a year ago, but it took only three matches to gain that honor for the 2007 campaign.  After a tough pool play round on Friday night that saw the Panthers drop two matches to Taylor University and host U-M Dearborn, the Panthers were hungry against the University of Rio Grande (OH) in their opening match on Saturday morning.
After posting victories in the first two games of the match (30-27, 30-14), Rio Grande climbed back into the match and forced a 5th game which Davenport took 15-12.  DU was led by Kayla Vandermolen's (Cedar Springs, MI) 47 assists and Autumn Williams' (Fruitport, MI) 14 kills and 19 digs.  The win took Davenport's overall record to 1-2 on the year and they finished the weekend at 1-3.
