Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The 2007 WHAC All-Conference men's basketball teams were released today with Cornerstone University senior center John Jonker earning leauge Player of the Year honors from the eight conference coaches.
Jonker completed a season long run toward Player of the Year honors after being named co-preseason Player of the Year by league coaches in October.
The Grand Rapids, Michigan native finished the regular season as the league leader in rebounds (8.7 per game) and was third in the conference in scoring with 18.8 per night. Jonker also paced all WHAC players in field goal percentage, shooting at a 61.3-percent clip (198-of-323).
Also earning first team All-WHAC honors was Aquinas College guard Jeff Jayson. Also named co-preseason Player of the Year in October, Jayson finished the year sixth in the league in scoring (16.6 per game) and fifth in assists with 3.2 per game.
Madonna University junior forward D.J. Bridges, Cornerstone's Andy Bronkema and Concordia's Troy Weishaar finish our the five-man first team.
After guiding his team to their best ever WHAC regular season finish and the #3 seed in the league tournament, Concordia head coach Ben Limback was named WHAC Coach of the Year. Limback's squad was poised atop the WHAC standing for the first half of the season and finished with a 17-13 overall record and 9-5 in WHAC play.
Weishaar was named the WHAC Newcomer of the Year. The senior transfer finished fourth in the league in scoring with 17.2 points per game.
Second team All-WHAC selections include; Indiana Tech's Jon Battle, Concordia's Nate Ashcraft, Cornerstone's Kevin Wurn, Aquinas' Jeff Wierzbicki and Madonna's Derrick Mudri.
Madonna head coach Chuck Henry was named the Coach of Character by his peers. Henry guided his team to their best WHAC finish and the #4 seed in the WHAC tournament while exhibiting the NAIA five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Henry heads a list of eight Champions of Character team members.
In addition to getting it done on the court, 17 student-athletes were recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom as academic All-WHAC honorees.
