Grand Rapids, MI -- League coaches have predicted a mirror image of the final 2005-06 women’s basketball standings and top player in their 2006-07 pre-season poll Tuesday, tabbing reigning champion Aquinas to repeat and Saints center Jackie Braspenninx to defend her Player-of-the-Year crown.
Braspenninx, a senior center from Ravenna, Michigan, averaged 18.1 points per game and paced the league in blocked shots with 68, was a unanimous pre-season All-Conference selection and is the pre-season Player-of-the-Year. Head Coach Linda Nash will rely on Braspenninx and fellow pre-season selection Claire Hogan (Muskegon, MI) to help the Saints repeat as regular season champions after posting a 13-1 league mark last season. Davenport University, who finished second in their first season as a WHAC member and beat Aquinas in the league tournament championship game, is picked to finish second again the season. Head coach Mark Youngs, will look to take his team to the NAIA National Tournament for the third straight season with pre-season selections Sara Haverdink (Byron Center, MI) and Shannon Callaghan (Bay City, MI). Callaghan was a second-team all-league performer a year ago. Indiana Tech is picked to finish third according to league coaches under first year coach Bonnie Bonelli. The Lady Warriors will rely heavily on pre-season picks Cherish Cooley (Muskegon, MI) and Porsche Reeves (Flint, MI). Cornerstone University and Madonna University are picked fourth and fifth respectively. The Golden Eagles have a pair of players on the pre-season squad in forward Stephanie Allers (Coopersville, MI) and guard Jenna Plewes (Zeeland, MI). Madonna, under first year coach Carl Graves returns Martina Franklin (Redford, MI) as their lone pre-season honoree. Rounding out the pre-season poll are Siena Heights, Concordia and UM-Dearborn, predicted sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. |
