The Davenport University women’s basketball team, the Lady Panthers, beat out schools across the country to share the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 2005-2006 top academic award.

The Davenport women’s team tied with Dana College for the highest combined GPA of any National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) member school. The team’s 3.613 GPA was based on the previous academic year.

“The hard work of these women, on the court and in the classroom, tells me they will succeed in whatever they choose after their college career,” said Mark Youngs, Davenport University women’s basketball coach. “We are extremely proud of their achievements. ”

Returning players on this year’s teams all reside in Michigan and include sophomores: Lyndsey Shepherd, a marketing major and point guard from Vassar; Sara Haverdink, an accounting major and point guard from Byron Center; Kristin Bergsma, an accounting/finance major and forward from Grand Rapids; Lynne Blomberg, a management major and forward from Harbor Springs; and Stephani Roles, a marketing major and center from Peck.

The sole junior on the team is Jordan Loveberry, a marketing major and guard from Coldwater. Seniors Shannon Callaghan, a management major and forward from Bay City, and Danielle French, a human resource management major and point guard from Newberry complete the team.  Both French and Callaghan were named individual NAIA Academic All-Americans.

“With the experience and talent this team brings to the floor, we anticipate a great season,” added Youngs.
