SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - - Sophomore striker Ashley Parent (Amherstburg, Ontario / General Amherst) made the first meeting ever between the Madonna University women's soccer team and Lawrence Tech a record breaking one as she set new program records for goals in a match with five and points in a match with 11 as the Crusaders rolled to a 6-0 win in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) match on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 17).
Parent's five goals broke the previous mark of four set by All-Americans Kelly Japowicz in 2005 against Indiana Tech and by Sarah Pack – who turned the trick twice – against both St. Francis and William Woods in the 2003 season. The 11 points is the most since Japowicz had nine points against the Warriors seven years and 12 days prior to Parent's feat.
The six goals are the most by a Madonna team since the 2009 squad defeated Concordia, 7-0, on Oct. 31.
The Crusaders dominated the match from the start, outshooting the Blue Devils 36-2 and held a 22-0 edge in shots on goal to extend their winning streak to five matches and pull into a tie for second place in the WHAC. Freshman goal keeper Blaire Schmalenberg (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Cousino) did not have to make a save in earning her eighth victory of the season.
Parent got on the board at the 10:43 mark taking a thru ball from freshman midfielder Jennifer Jurcak (Shelby Township, Mich. / Eisenhower) and beating Katelyn Watson to the inside of the right post for a 1-0 lead.
The 1-0 margin stood until Parent made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, corralling a ball that junior midfielder Amanda Jenaway (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) played over the top, and sent a shot high past Watson for her second goal of the match.
Parent completed her hat trick just over seven minutes later (34:41) when she received a ball over the top again from Jenaway who had gotten a pass from junior Kelsey Littman (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) and deposited her shot past Watson for a 3-0 lead heading into intermission.
MU kept the pressure up but could not score again until the 84:37 mark when Parent led freshman Morgan Himanek (Shelby Township, Mich. / Regina Catholic) with a pass and Himanek sent her shot past Watson to the left post for a 4-0 lead.
Parent added goal number four 1:17 later (85:54), dribbling in on her own and beating Watson for a 5-0 margin. The final goal of the record setting day for Parent came off of a connecting ball from junior midfielder Liliana Serratos (Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn) with just four seconds left in the match for the 6-0 final.
Watson, despite giving up the six goals, stopped 16 shots on the day to take the loss.
MU faces its stiffest test of the season to date on Friday (Oct. 19), traveling to NCAA Division I Detroit for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Titan Field.
