(Ann Arbor, MI) – After nine seasons at the helm of the men's basketball program, Ben Limback has stepped down to focus on his other position as Director of Admissions at Concordia. Limback leaves the sidelines as the winningest men's basketball coach in program history collecting 115 wins during his tenure. Assistant Coach, Matt Distelrath, has been promoted and will take over as the new head coach.
Coach Limback led the Cardinals to their first ever CIT Championship in 2006 and repeated as CIT champions in 2007. He was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2007. Furthermore, prior to Coach Limback's arrival in 2003, the last winning mark in the Cardinal basketball program was the 1979-80 season.
Concordia's Athletic Director Andrea Gorski stated that "We are sad to see Ben step down as the Men's Basketball Coach. We will miss him not only as a coach, but as a huge contributor to the athletic department. Ben has always been a team player and was willing to assist in any way he could. It is not surprising that he has excelled as the Director of Admissions, and our university has a lot to look forward to with all his attention now going towards the admissions department."
With the departure of Limback from the basketball program, the Cardinal squad will have a familiar face calling the shots as Matt Distelrath will remain with the program in his new role as head coach. Coach Distelrath is a 2004 graduate of Concordia - Ann Arbor and has been on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the past four years.
During his days as a student at CUAA, Distelrath was the staring point guard for the Cardinals his junior and senior year. After graduation, Coach Distelrath served as an assistant coach at Marygrove College for two seasons before returning to his alma mater to join Limback's staff.
Andrea Gorski went on to state that "Promoting Coach Distelrath to the position of Head Men's Basketball Coach will keep the program moving in the right direction. Matt has been responsible for recruiting most of the current and incoming men's basketball student-athletes and has worked hard to develop relationships with the basketball community in Michigan. Being a CUAA athlete and alum definitely played a role in his promotion as well as the positive feedback we received from both current and incoming players and parents. We are excited about the next phase of Concordia basketball."
