Fort Wayne, Ind. - Coming off one of the most successful years in school history, Indiana Tech student-athletes raised the bar once again in 2011-12, setting a new standard, both academically and athletically.
Indiana Tech reached a new benchmark for the number of junior and senior student-athletes achieving outstanding grades. Ninety (90) Warriors qualified for Academic All-Conference recognition with a grade point average of 3.25 or better, and an impressive 56 athletes qualified for NAIA Scholar-Athlete status carrying over a 3.5 GPA.
In addition to those honors, 80 athletes were inducted into the National College Athletic Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma. These students were the first members of the Indiana Sigma chapter of the society. Selection for membership was based on academics, athletics, and character. Inductees must have been a junior or senior with a 3.4 or higher GPA, must letter in at least one sport, and must be recommended by a coach.
Along with all of the success in the classroom, Indiana Tech athletes excelled on the field. The Warriors finished in second place for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) All-Sports Trophy, accumulating 54.5 points, only 6.5 behind the winner Davenport University. Tech captured four WHAC championships this year in volleyball, women's indoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, and baseball, while the women's lacrosse team won the NWLL conference title.
Tech also reached an unprecedented level in the NAIA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings. The Warriors climbed all the way to No. 22 in the final standings with 440.00 total points, surpassing last year's mark at No. 33 with 344.50 points. Indiana Tech was also the only WHAC member represented in the top-25.
Indiana Tech had 11 teams experience national postseason play in 2011-12, saw 47 athletes earn All-America status, and crowned one national champion at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the pole vault. Four Warrior coaches were also honored at the conference level after being named WHAC Coaches of the Year and another named the WHAC Champions of Character Coach.
