Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) conference tournament champ Madonna ended its season in pool play at the NAIA National Championship.
The Crusaders dropped their opening game in Pool G, 5-2, to defending national champ and seventh-ranked Oregon Tech. Madonna led 2-0 heading into the fifth inning thanks to a two-run shot from Jackie Barley in the opening at-bat. oregon Tech rallied with a four-run sixth inning to seal the win. Hallie Minch took the loss (14-10) while Taylor Schmidt pitched a complete game for the win.
Barley stepped up again in the second game of pool play, belting out another two-run homer to take a 2-1 lead in the third. No. 10 Shorter (Ga.) scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-2 victory. Minch gave up four earned runs and fell to 14-11 on the year. Maddie Bray threw 4.2 innings fo relief had the win.
Madonna needed an extra inning to upset No. 17 St. Gregory's (Okla.) 6-3 to close out pool play. Minch earned the complete-game victory, sacttering eight hits and walking just one to finish 15-11 on the season. Arielle Cox scored two in the eighth inning for the win.
Shorter advanced to the elimination bracket with a perfect pool-play record. Madonna ends its season at 34-14.
