GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport captured its second consecutive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) All-Sports Trophy with 61 points for the 2011-12 season. The Panthers score is based on points given to the highest finishes in four men's and four women's conference sports.
DU expanded on last year's 54.5 winning total by claiming four conference championships. Davenport captured two league titles on the men's side in basketball and golf, and scored points with a second-place finish in baseball and a third-place finish in soccer. On the women's side, the Panthers tied for first in both basketball and softball, finished third in volleyball, and fourth in golf.
"In a year that saw many different WHAC members compete, Davenport maintained a balanced effort throughout the year," said WHAC commissioner Rob Miller. "Athletics Director Paul Lowden and his staff deserve a lot of credit for a job well done."
Indiana Tech finished second for the second straight year and equaled DU's winning point total from a year ago with 54.5. The Warriors scored with conference titles in volleyball and baseball and picked up points league titles in women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
The conference uses the highest regular-season finish in eight conference sports (four women and four men) for each school to determine the All-Sports winner. The number of schools participating in each sport determines the amount of points awarded. A sport with all 10 schools participating gives 10 points to first place, nine points to second place, and so on. A tie results in adding the total points for the tied spots together and dividing by the number of teams tied, with the teams sharing the points.
