After five years at the helm of the Indiana Tech volleyball program, Head Coach Kirsta Solberg has announced her resignation. Solberg, an Ohio native, will return to her home state, get married and begin her new position as an assistant coach at Xavier University.
"It is with a sad heart that I say goodbye to an amazing place with such fantastic people," Solberg said. "I have been given the opportunity to continue to work in the career that I love as well as piece my personal life together by being able to live with my future husband."
Coach Solberg, a four-time WHAC Coach of the Year award winner, has a record of 160-49 in her five full seasons with the Warriors, including four straight seasons with at least 33 wins. Her 160 wins and .766 winning percentage are the best in Tech history.
Under her direction, the Indiana Tech volleyball team has won four WHAC regular season championships, three WHAC tournament championships, and has made four NAIA National Tournament appearances, including a top 12 finish in 2009.
Coach Solberg has been recently recognized as an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 member and was selected as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference's nominee for the NAIA Coach of Character Award.
In addition to all of the success Coach Solberg and her team have experienced on the court, they have stood out in the classroom and the community as well. Since her arrival in 2007, she has coached 20 NAIA Academic All-Americans and her team GPA has never been below a 3.43.
Her teams are also active in the Fort Wayne community, volunteering for events like Bag for Cancer, Blessings in a Backpack, and Fort for Fitness.
Coach Solberg has also served as the director of the Wellness Center and was named the Assistant Athletic Director in January 2010.
"I am extremely appreciative for the opportunity that Indiana Tech gave to me as a young and inexperienced coach," said Solberg. "This institution taking a chance on me has opened up my life to a career that I am so passionate about and this place gave me so many ways to learn to be a great coach and employee. I will be forever thankful for my time here at Indiana Tech, and will always be a Warrior at heart."
The Indiana Tech family would like to thank Kirsta for her everything she has done for the school, athletic department, and the Warrior volleyball program.
The search for the next head coach will begin immediately. Indiana Tech, located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and is an NAIA institution.
