GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Aquinas men's tennis team capture the 2012 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) tournament title with 5-0 win over Northwestern Ohio.
Aquinas needed just two of the singles matches after capturing all three of the double competitions. The #2 and #3 doubles matches went much longer than the #1 competition as Aaron Hendrick and Nik Artaev defeated Jeff Brown and Juan Cardenas 8-1 to start the tournament. Kyle Masteller and Travis Wolf defeated Gustavo Rueda and Cassio Sirimarco 8-6 at the #2 spot while the team of John Telfer and Peter Tratt also needed the extra time to defeat Emin Alpan and Sam Rutter 8-6 at the #3 spot.
In singles play, Hendrick bested Rueda 6-2, 6-2 to take the #1 singles crown and Artaev finished Brown 6-3, 6-2 at the second singles spot.
In the consolation competition, Davenport (12-13) defeated Indiana Tech 5-0 to join Aquinas and UNOH in representing the WHAC in NAIA regional competition.
Aquinas improved to 23-2 overall while UNOH fell to 17-6. Click here to see complete results. Postseason honors will be released later in the week.
