Grand Rapids, Mich. Last night it was #1 Kentucky losing to South Carolina in men's basketball and tonight it was #1 Davenport losing to the Lady Golden Eagles 65-54. Davenport took a 7-2 lead early in the half but the Golden Eagles responded with a quick 6-0 run over the next minute to take an 8-7 lead and they never relinquished the lead for the rest of the night. Cornerstone would run off another 6-0 run to take a 14-7 lead. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to as much as 11 (29-18) with 3:14 remaining but Davenport responded with a 7-3 run to finish the half and went into the locker room down 32-25. The Panther came out and made an early run in the second half and cut the Golden Eagles lead to 35-33 on a 3 point basket at 16:26 Cornerstone countered with an 8-2 run culminated by a 3 point shot by Ashleigh Lund with 12:39 remaining. The Golden Eagles got the lead to double digits on two foul shots by Alicia TerHaar with 10:59 remaining. Cornerstone then kept Davenport at bay for the remainder of the half keeping their lead right around 10 points. Robyn Veltkamp led the Golden Eagles with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Melissa Veltkamp had a very similar night scoring 16 points, pulling down 8 boards, and dishing out 6 assists. Brook Carter scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone shot 41.4% from the field and limited Davenport to just 34.6% from the field including 16.7% (3-18) from behind the arc. The Panters were held 37 points below their average of 91ppg. Cornerstone improves to 5-2 in the WHAC and 12-10 overall while the Panthers move to 21-2 and 7-1 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will return to action this Saturday when they host #16 Aquinas at 1:00 p.m. The Saints defeated Cornerstone 62-60 on a buzzer beater back on January 6th. |
