LIVONIA, Mich.  - In the holiday spirit, a host of Madonna University student-athletes have partnered with the Peace and Justice subcommittee at MU to initiate a blanket drive for children at Children's Hospital of Michigan.
A pair of sophomore student-athletes - softball player Amanda Straub (Monroe, Mich.) and women's basketball player Katie Martin (Wyandotte, Mich.) - are chairs of the committee and spearheaded the drive.

"The Peace and Justice Subcommittee decided to do a project in the spirit of Christmas and one of our members had the idea to make blankets for Children's Hospital," said Straub during the blanket making party held earlier this week on the MU campus. "These blankets will be handed out to the children as "safety" blankets as their journey through in what we hope will be to a recovering. The whole student body has been asked to join in this experience however softball and basketball have taken a keen interest in doing so. The blankets will be delivered to Children's Hospital in hopes that they will put a smile on a child's face."

Martin echoed Straub's comments, "These kids are in the hospital for an illness they have no control over and we hope that these blankets bring the kids some comfort and joy during the holiday season. We are lucky enough to be healthy enough to spend the holidays at home and want to make the holidays a little better for them."

The MU student-athletes and other students made over 20 blankets in less than two hours and will deliver the blankets following final exams in a little over a week.
