Indiana Institute of Technology headlines the six teams competing in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Volleyball Tournament. The winner of the conference tournament earns an automatic bid to the 30th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship.
With the top seed, Indiana Tech will be idle the first round. Second-seeded Madonna University also receives a bye. Aquinas College earned the third seed, Cornerstone University was awarded the fourth seed. Davenport University and University of Michigan-Dearborn close out the teams at No. 5 and 6 respectively.
After a rough early part of the season, Tech found the magic needed to finish the season in first place with a 29-9 record. The Warriors went 14-0 in conference matches and rank in the Top 30 in the country in five team statistical categories. Ashley Hamilton is 20th in the nation for total kills with 444 and ranks No. 33 in kills per game with 3.67. Sophomore Kayla Hartman broke the school record for digs in a season with 544.
Second-seeded Madonna's season was highlighted by Jerry Abraham's win number 900. The head coach's .795 winning percentage ranks him among the sport's best. Mary McGinnis leads the conference with 513 kills - good enough for seventh in the NAIA - thanks in part to the assists of Inta Grinvalds. Grinvalds currently leads the nation in total assists (1,575) and assists per game (11.75).
Aquinas enters the tournament as the third seed after winning its 25th game of the season and tying for second place. Sitting at 25-5 overall and 11-3 in the WHAC, the Saints are deep in talent. Mollie Lounds is second in the conference with a .342 hitting percentage and Sarah LeClair is first averaging 4.6 digs per set.
No. 4 Cornerstone finished the regular season on a high note, defeating Davenport in four on senior night for an overall record of 23-16 (8-6 WHAC). The win secured the fourth seed for the Golden Eagles and a opening-round home game.
Davenport finished conference play with a 6-8 record and an 18-16 overall record for the fifth spot. Many Panthers were sidelined late in the year with flu-like symptoms and will rest until opening round on Tuesday. Kayla Vandermolen has a league-high 47 serving aces to lead DU.
Rounding out the seeds is UM-Dearborn (12-26/2-12). UMD came out on top of a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference due to tiebreaking procedures. Megan Smith leads the team in assists and Candace McPherson has recorded 88 blocks.
