LOS ANGELES, Calif. - - Former Madonna University golfer and current volunteer assistant baseball coach Charlie Haeger was called up by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday (Aug. 11) night from AAA Albuquerque and will be in uniform for Wednesday afternoon's game in San Francisco against the Giants.

Haeger - who will wear No. 37 for L.A. - earned his second selection to the AAA All-Star team earlier this summer and has posted an 11-6 record and a 3.55 earned run average through 22 starts this season for the Isotopes.  The knuckleballer made his last appearance for AlbuquerqueFriday (Aug.  7), hurling four scoreless innings.

Dodger's manager Joe Torre said he wasn't concerned about who would catch Haeger and the knuckleball, saying he believes backup Brad Ausmus has an oversized catcher's mitt. Torre, a former catcher, said he wasn't volunteering to come out of retirement.

"My catching a knuckleball was so good the Braves went out and got Bob Uecker, which hastened the end of his playing career and he became a broadcaster," joked Torre. "I feel responsible for making him a broadcaster."

A 25th round draft pick of the White Sox in 2001 out of Detroit Catholic Central HS, Haeger (The younger brother of current Crusader skipper Greg Haeger) briefly retired from professional baseball following the 2002 season, returning to MU and going down in Crusader athletic history as taking the first ever swing for the Madonna golf team in 2003.

After returning to baseball in 2004, Haeger was named to the Carolina League All-Star Team in 2005 before making his major league debut in 2006 for the White Sox against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Haeger has a 1-1 major league record in 19 appearances with the White Sox (2006, 2007) and the San Diego Padres (2008).
