ADRIAN, Mich. - - Sophomore pitcher Jess Irwin (Monroe, Mich.) made history again on Friday (April 17) by breaking her own single-single season strike out record in an 8-0 game one win at Siena Heights. The Crusaders completed the sweep with a 5-2 win in game two at Christensen Field.

Irwin - who recorded 275 punch outs as a freshman in 2008 - struck out 11 hitters to set the new season best with 277 strike outs. In game one of the day Irwin allowed just two hits and did not surrender a run in picking up her 21st win of the season. Hallie Minch (Garden City, Mich.) threw a complete game in the night cap, striking out eight while scattering three hits in improving to 18-2 on the year.

Tedi Johnston (New Boston, Mich.) led the hit parade for MU, going a combined 3-for-7 with three runs batted in and a home run. The Crusaders also got a long ball from Ashley Shay (Garden City, Mich.) who was 3-for-5 with her long ball. Cat Sidor (Livonia, Mich.) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the day's opener.

Madonna got the scoring started in the third when Tori Turner (Milan, Mich.) led off with a triple and came home two batters later on a Kelly Lesko (Trenton, Mich.) ground ball to make it 1-0.

Irwin set her record in the fourth, posting her 10th strike out of the day by sending Jess Singletary down on strikes.

The Crusaders then broke the game open, scoring seven times in the sixth to go up 8-0. Shay reached on a two-out double and pinch runner Amanda Straub (Monroe, Mich.) came home on a Rachael Kethe (Lenox, Mich.) double to make it 2-0. Johnston then stepped up and hit her team leading eighth home run of the season to score Kethe and make it 4-0. The lead grew to 6-0 when Kathleen Smiley (Wixom, Mich.) tripled home Turner who had earlier singled and a Saint miscue allowed Smiley to run home for the sixth run of the game.

Runs seven and eight came home when Lesko and Brittney Scero (Canton, Mich.) reached on walks and then scored on a Sidor double for the 8-0 lead.

Irwin allowed a walk in the bottom of the sixth but that did not come back to haunt her or the Crusaders as she recoded the final out via a ground out to Sidor and an 8-0 win.

Game two was a tighter affair with MU plating single runs in the first and third to go up 2-0. Scero led off with a double and after moving to third on a passed ball scored on a Danielle Richardson (Flint, Mich.) sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the third when Scero reached on an error by the Saint outfield and came home one batter later on a Sidor single for a two-run lead.

MU plated run three in the fourth when Johnston came home on a Lesko double for a 3-0 lead.

SHU cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs on a Singletary home run to make it 3-2.

The Crusaders got those runs back in the fifth, using a Shay homer followed by a triple from LaMilza and a single from Johnston to go up 5-2. The three-run lead held up as Minch allowed just one more Saint to reach base the final three innings to pick up the win.

The Crusaders wrap up their four-game road trip on Saturday (April 18) with a double header at Indiana Tech. First pitch is slated for 1pm.
