Second-seeded Cornerstone University could not hold onto the lead against Concordia University (Neb.) as Whitney Stichka hit a layup with 1.2 seconds on the clock to steal a 74-73 victory in the second round of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.
Concordia held as much as a 12-point lead in the first half before the Golden Eagles battled to a 36-36 tie at the half and exchanged leads throughout the second half. With a little more than four minutes remaining in the game, Cornerstone held a one-point lead at 63-62. No. 3 seed Concordia countered with a three-point to take a two-point lead. Concordia stretched its lead to four points after an off-ball foul on Cornerstone.
The Golden Eagles fought back to take a 73-72 lead on two freethrows from Jenna Plewes with 8.6 ticks on the clock. Concordia inbounded the ball and raced the length of the court for the winning layup.
Concordia's Stichka scored 33 points and the winning shot to lead the Bulldogs (26-8) to the quarterfinal round.
CU's season ends at 27-8. The final game saw five players score in double figures. Plewes at 19 points, Robyn Veltkamp added 13, Melissa Veltkamp scored 12 points and Brooke Carter had 11. Kara Overbeek moved into eighth place on Cornerstone's all-time scoring list after scoring 11 points.
