The women's basketball team at Davenport University posted the most points so far in the 2009 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship in an 88-62 victory against Indiana University Southeast. DU is one of four top seeds at the tournament held at the Tyson Event Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa. Davenport scored 44 points in the first half and applied its trademark defensive pressure to limit IU-Southeast to just 19 first-half points. The first half proved to be the difference in the game as the Patners matched their first-half points after intermission, scoring another 44 points. IU-Southeast also upped its offensive performance, scoring 43 points in the second half. Davenport forced 30 turnovers and dominated the boards 52-40. The Panthers held IU-Southeast to just 36% shooting from the field. The game did provide important experience for DU as 16 players saw action, none of which played for more than 22 minutes. Indiana-Southeast's season ended with a 19-9 record. Twelve players scored for DU, led by Brittany Lyman's 18 points and seven rebounds. Abby Neff contributed 13 points and Karla Despres 11 points. The Panthers improved to 30-2 and will face Huntington College (Ind.) on Friday. |
