Top-seeded Aquinas College handed #2 Cornerstone University a 59-48 loss in the conference tournament championship game to earn a trip to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship in Point Lookout, Mo.
Cornerstone took the early lead, scoring first on a shot from Matt Kingshott and held the lead most of the first half until Pedga Lazic scored on a put back at the 6:31 mark to knot the game at 14-14. After trading baskets, James Telman scored for Aquinas to put the Saints on top - a lead secured into half time.
Up by four points after intermission, 27-23, Aquinas scored on its first possession of the second half and continued to build on its lead. The Saints led by as many as 11 points midway through the half until Cornerstone's Ronald Bates scored off a turnover and the Golden Eagles scored three consecutive baskets to pull within five points at 42-37.
Aquinas followed with three field goals of its own to take a 50-39 lead with 8:41 remaining in the game. Cornerstone got as close as six points when Dan Possehl connected on two free throws to put the score at 51-45 at the 4:34 mark. Neither team scored during the next three minutes until Ty Motley made both charity throws from a one-and-one with 1:13 left to play for a 53-45 Aquinas lead. Forced to foul, Cornerstone put Aquinas at the free throw line three times in the last minute. John Lierman, Lazic and Jordan Torres sealed the victory for Aquinas after the three combined for 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Lazic led Aquinas, now 24-9, with a game-high marks of 18 points and 14 rebounds. James Telman added 10 points for the Saints.
Cornerstone was led by Caleb Simmons with 12 points and eight rebounds. Ronald Bates chipped in 10 points as the Golden Eagles finish with a 21-12 record.
