The stage is set for the championship game of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) tournament. Top-seeded Aquinas College will play host to No. 3 Cornerstone University on Tuesday, March 3 after the two teams won their respective semifinal games on Saturday. The winner receives an automatic berth to the 2009 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo.
Hot shooting and strong rebounding led Aquinas to an 80-65 victory against No. 4 Indiana Institute of Technology. The Saints shot 57.8% from the floor, including 44.4% from behind the three-point line and out rebounded Tech 35 to 24 without much help from WHAC Player of the Year Pedja Lazic. Lazic fouled out of the game with only eight points and five rebounds.
Aquinas was down early to Tech as the Warriors jumped out to a 14-8 lead just five minutes into the game. Aquinas went on an 8-2 run to tie the game 16-16, where it remained for the next two minutes until Sadelle Moore nailed a three-pointer for Tech at the 9:49 mark. Aquinas battled back to take a half time lead of 34-29 and didn't trail again until the 15:23 mark of the second half.
After four lead changes and two ties, Aquinas regained the lead for good on a field goal by Damacious White with 13:41 remaining in the game. Indiana Tech made a surge, but a missed shot, a turnover and a blocked shot allowed Aquinas to pull away for the victory.
Indiana Tech finishes the season with an overall record of 21-11. The Warriors were led by Tim Browning with 17 points and seven rebounds. Shaun Cabrera and Brad Webster also scored in double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.
Aquinas (23-9) was led by John Lierman's 25 points. James Telman added 14 and Damacious White finished with 11.
The cinderella tournament came to a close for No. 7 seed University of Michigan Dearborn. Just two days after upending second-seeded Davenport University, Dearborn fell short against Cornerstone by a score of 92-67.
Cornerstone jumped to a 10-1 lead and used a strong first half to open up the lead for a 53-27 half time score. The second half saw much of the same as Cornerstone shot a blistering 53.5% from the field (62.5% from three-point range).
UM-Dearborn placed three players in double figures - Rick Doran with 18, Jonathon Cannon with 16 and Myke White with 11 points. They finish the season with a 7-24 record.
Ronald Bates of Cornerstone led all scores with a career-high 24 points. Ryan Zwier added 17 while Matt Kingshott chipped in 14 points. The Golden Eagles take a 21-11 record into the championship game.
