LEXINGTON, Ky. - -The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced its 2008 All-Region and All-America teams today and four Crusaders were among the honorees.
Seniors Whitney Fuelling (Milford, Mich.) and Lubovj Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) along with junior Inta Grinvalds (Portage, Mich.) were named to the All-Mideast Region First Team while junior Mary McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) was selected to the Honorable Mention team. Tihomirova was then named to the All-America First Team while Fuelling was tabbed to the All-America Second Team. Tihomirova led MU and ranked 11th nationally with her 4.08 kills per set average and sits fifth all-time at Madonna with her 2,413 career terminations. In her final season at MU, the Latvia native put down 616 balls. She also led the Crusaders with 43 aces this season and holds the single season record for kills with 967, set last season. Fuelling led the WHAC and ranked 10th in the nation with her .385 attack percentage. The senior middle hitter also paced the WHAC with 1.3 blocks per set. Those 1.3 blocks also ranked her 18th on the national scene. Grinvalds led the WHAC and was tied for fourth nationally with a 10.8 assist per set average. Her 1624 total assists this season is good for a top-15 finish in a single-season and moves her career total to 5,322 and second on the all-time list in MU history. McGinnis' 3.2 kills per set ranked her fourth in the conference to help her earn First Team All-WHAC honors in addition to the regional award. The Crusaders finished the season 35-7 overall and captured their 12th straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship. MU advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the 11th time overall and for the seventh straight season.
